The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:
undertaken nursing work in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia professional practice standards, codes and guidelines
applied specialised clinical nursing skills for 3 people during anaesthesia, surgery and recovery in perioperative nursing environment, including:
preparing and positioning the person for a surgical procedure
performing intra-operative observations and supporting scrub nurse with monitoring materials
maintaining the person’s airway before and after surgery
using oral suctioning techniques intra-operatively
collecting specimens for pathology.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

Australian Standards relating to hazards in the perioperative environment including electrical hazards, radiation hazards and sharps disposal
complications of surgical procedures and their management, including how to provide emergency and first aid treatment
complications associated with anaesthesia, including emergency treatment, infection control practices and organisation policies and procedures specific to perioperative environment
legal and ethical considerations (national, State/Territory, local) relevant to the nursing profession and how these are applied in nursing practice
policy statements, literature and guidelines from professional bodies associated with perioperative care and management, including ACORN
medical terminology associated with perioperative care
risk of falls post-surgery
philosophical framework for perioperative nursing
anaesthetic pharmacology
positioning of a person for specific surgical procedures, including potential for post-operative pressure injury from incorrect position during surgery

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions. The following conditions must be met for this unit:
use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources in line with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council’s Standards
modelling of industry operating conditions including access to real people for simulations and scenarios in enrolled nursing work.
Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
In addition, assessors must hold current registration as a registered nurse with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
